Als ich
den ersten Morgen hier vor Bird Island (https://www.birdislandseychelles.com)
kurz vor 6 erwachte, dämmerte es und die Stimmen der Vögel waren
verstummt... Gestern hatten wir mit der Turquoise (https://www.voileseychelles.com) 120
km in etwa 9 Stunden von Mahé nach Bird Island hinter uns gelegt (mit dem Motor
da kein Wind) und heute Morgen zeigte sich ein ganz anderes Bild: Eine flache
Koralleninsel ersetzte die gewohnten Granitfelsen.
When I woke up shortly before 6 am on the first morning here off Bird Island (https://www.birdislandseychelles.com), it was dawning and the voices of the birds were silent... Yesterday we had travelled about 120 km on Turquoise (https://www.voileseychelles.com) in about 9 hours from Mahé to Bird Island (motoring as there was no wind) and this morning a completely different picture emerged: A flat coral island replaced the usual granite rocks.

Nach dem
Frühstück fuhr uns Fred mit seinem Dingy an Land und führte uns zur 2016
gegründeten Lodge. Diese schien ziemlich verlassen... die einzigen Bewohner,
die wir antrafen, waren Aldabra-Riesenschildkröten. Nachdem George auf Galapagos verstarb, lebt hier auf Bird Island übrigens der Älteste überhaupt (mit einem verwirrenden weiblichen Namen): Esmeralda mit ca.
300 kg und 200 Jahren auf dem Buckel!
After breakfast, Fred drove us ashore with his dingey and led us to the lodge, which was founded in 2016. It seemed pretty deserted... the only residents we encountered were Aldabra giant tortoises. By the way, after George of Galapagos has passed away, the oldest male lives here on Bird Island (with a confusing female name): Esmeralda with approx. 300 kg has reached the ripe old age of about 200 years!

Da ich
mich nun schon mal auf Bird Island befand, packte ich die Gelegenheit beim
Schopf und umrundete die 1.5 x 0.7 km kleine Insel in einer Stunde - es waren
genau 5 km! Das tat ich jeden Tag: Am Donnerstag Morgen reiste ich mit Patrizia
und dem Kanu an und am Freitag umjoggte ich sie zum Sonnenaufgang. : )
Bei
meinen Besuchen im Vogelparadies Bird Island (privates Naturreservat seit 1967) stachen mir
die vielen bereits zusammengesammelten Müllhaufen und das täglich neu
angeschwemmte Plastik ins Auge... Ich machte keine Fotos, da ich diesen Ort als Paradies festhalten wollte - trotzdem kann ich es einfach nicht fassen, dass es
immer noch Leute gibt, die nicht wahrhaben wollen, dass die Menschen dafür
verantwortlich sind, dass unser Planet (mit unseren Resourcen) langsam erstickt... weil wir einfach zu viele sind und das Gleichgewicht stören... Das Schlimmste aber
ist, dass unsere Jugend mit solch einer Realität aufwächst, denkt das sei
normal und sich anpasst… : ((
Since I was already on Bird Island, I grabbed the opportunity and circled the 1.5 x 0.7 km small island in one hour - exactly 5 km! That’s what I did that every day: on Thursday morning I came with Patrizia by canoe and on Friday I jogged around at sunrise. : )
During my visits to the bird paradise Bird Island (private nature reserve since 1967) the many piles of garbage, that had already been collected, and the plastic, that was washed ashore every day anew, caught my eye... I didn't take pictures of it because I wanted to cherish this place as a paradise - nevertheless I just cannot believe that there are still people who do not want to admit that humans are responsible fora slowly suffocating of our planet (with our recources)... because we are simply too many and upset the balance... The worst thing is, that our youth grow up with such a reality, thinking it is normal and adapting to it... : ((

Bird
Island sowie Cousin und Aride wurden gerade noch rechtzeitig vor Menschen
gerettet und bieten einen der seltenen Zufluchtsorte für tausende Seevögel,
hier vor allem Russseeschwalben und Noddis, die (beide?) wie die
Gelbschnabelsturmtaucher auf den Azoren nachaktiv scheinen und eine Art
Ortungsruf entwickelt haben.
Bird Island as well as Cousin and Aride were rescued from humans just in time and offer one of the rare places of refuge for thousands of seabirds, here especially sooty terns and noddies, which (both?), like the yellow-billed shearwaters in the Azores, seem to be nocturnal and have developed a kind of location call.

Wie
bereits erwähnt, hatten wir ein Riesenglück erstens mit der Turquoise
auszulaufen und zweitens das Vogelparadies Bird Island zu besuchen! Die Insel
ist offiziell geschlossen und neue Regelungen machten unsere Abreise spannend
bis zum letzten Tag, denn nur gerade 1 Tag vor dem Auslaufen erfolgte ein
letzter offizieller Check und das endgültige OK... Zudem fiel Fred's Koch kurz
vor Abreise aus und wurde durch Steve ersetzt. Der entpuppte sich als sehr
kreativ und kochte so lecker, dass wir alle viel zu viel assen…
As already mentioned, we were utmost lucky to firstly put to sea with the Turquoise and secondly to visit the bird paradise of Bird Island! The island is officially closed and new regulations made our departure suspenseful until the last day, because only then there was a last official check and the final OK... In addition, Fred's usual cook dropped out shortly before departure and was replaced by Steve. He turned out to be very creative and cooked that deliciously that we all ate way too much…

Unser
Kapitän Fred ist auch der Besitzer der Turquiose, Tauchinstruktor und der 'Chef'-Taucher der Seychellen! Täglich ging er mit den Tauchern unterwasser und auch
ich erkundete das Riffende mit dem Steilabfall mal schnorchelnd aus...
Fred ist
ein wahrer Tausendsassa und seit 20 Jahren in den Seychellen. Er fliegt nebenbei
mehrere Typen von Helikoptern und Flächenfliegern und wenn er mal nichts zu tun
hat, spielt er seine Gitarre... Fred ist ein stets gut gelaunter, sichtlich
zufriedener und sehr positiver Zeitgenosse, der alles im Griff zu hat! : ))

Our captain Fred is also the owner of the Turquiose, diving instructor and the 'chief' diver of the Seychelles! Every day he went underwater with the divers and I also took the opportunity to check out the steep drop off (of the reef) by snorkelling...
Fred is a real jack-of-all-trades and has been in the Seychelles for 20 years. He also flies several types of helicopters and fixed-wings airplanes and when he has nothing to do, he plays his guitar... Fred is always in a good mood, visibly satisfied and a very positive contemporary, who has everything under control! : ))
