Am Donnerstag, Heilig Abend, hatte ich um 9:30 Uhr mit Kutos (Couteau) Sohn Evanio (Tel. 248-2829808) am Strand abgemacht um zur Nachbarinsel Cousin, eine der kleineren der 115 Seychelleninseln zu fahren... das Wetter am Morgen war wechselhaft, so rief ich Evanio eine halbe Stunde vorher an und wir beschlossen es zu versuchen... Die Überfahrt dauerte eine Viertelstunde und hatte hohen Wellengang heute. Aber diese Achterbahnfahrt war noch nicht der Höhepunkt: Kurz vor Cousin ankerte Eviano und wir wurden von einem kleinen Boot abgeholt, das mit Vollgas auf den Strand fuhr - ja, so landet man auf Cousin! ; )

On Thursday, Christmas Eve, at 9:30 am I had an arrangement with Kuto's (Couteau) son Evanio (Tel. 248-2829808) on the beach to go to the neighbouring island of Cousin, one of the smaller of the 115 Seychelles islands... the weather in the morning was changeable, so I called Evanio half an hour beforehand and we decided to give it a try... The crossing took a quarter of an hour and the waves were high today. But this rollercoaster ride was not the highlight: Eviano had to anchor a bit outside of Cousin Island and we were picked up by a small boat that drove onto the beach at full throttle - yes, that's how you land on Cousin! ; )

Als einziger Gast auf Cousin Island (http://www.cousinisland.net) heute wurde ich von Claire begrüsst und mit vielen interessanten Informationen über das Projekt BirdLife (seit 1968) gefüttert. Auf die fast 2-stündige Inseltour ging es mit Alex, der bereits seit 4 Jahren auf Cousin wohnt, in einer Hütte, die sein Vater und Vorreiter gebaut hatte. Alex blüht auf, wenn er von seiner Arbeit mit der Natur erzählt - und ich ebenfalls... neben den vielen freien Aldabra Riesenschildkröten überall, sahen wir endemische Seychellendajale ihr Territorium bewachen, Weissschwanz-Tropikvögel und Keilschwanz-Sturmtaucher am Boden in ihrem Nest sitzen, Feenseeschwalben ihr Ei auf einem nackten Ast ausbrüten und Meereschildkröten ihre Nest ausgraben…

As the only guest on Cousin Island (http://www.cousinisland.net) today I was welcomed and fed with a lot of interesting information about the BirdLife project (since 1968) by Claire. Alex took me on an almost 2-hour island tour, he has been living on Cousin for 4 years now, in a hut that his father and pioneer had built. Alex thrives when talking about his work with nature - and so did I... In addition to the many free Aldabra giant tortoises everywhere, we saw endemic Seychelles magpie robins guarding their territory, white-tailed tropical birds and wedge-tailed shearwaters sitting on the ground in their nests, white terns hatching their egg on a bare branch and sea turtles digging their nest...

Evanio, der geduldig gewartet hatte, brachte mich mit einer Extratour entlang der Grande Anse zum Le Tropique Villa (http://www.tropiquevilla.com) zurück - was für ein erfüllendes Weihnachtsgeschenk war das heute und das mit sehr viel Wetterglück! : )

Als ich zuhause meine e-mails checkte, wartete das zweite Weihnachtsgeschenk auf mich: Surfari hatte sich gemeldet: Morgen würde ein Bootsausflug zur Insel Curieuse stattfindet - klar, dass ich da mitgehen würde!

Evanio, who had waited patiently, took me back to Le Tropique Villa (http://www.tropiquevilla.com) with an extra tour along the Grande Anse - what a fulfilling Christmas present it was today and with a lot of luck with the weather! :)

When I checked my e-mails at home, my second Christmas present was awaiting me: Surfari had contacted me: Tomorrow there would be a boat trip to the island of Curieuse - of course I would go with them!

So fuhr ich am Freitag, Weihnachtstag, um 8:30 Uhr los durch das Vallée de Mai zur Cote d'Or/Anse Volbert, wo ich 20 Minuten später eintraf. Dort wartete David und Julio von Surfari (https://www.surfariseychelles.com) mit einem ihrer Boote und als die aufgestellte Familie Schröder eintraf, ging es los. Auch hier dauerte die Überfahrt nicht mehr als 15 Minuten und ein wunderschöner Strand sowie freilebenden Aldabra Riesenschildkröten erwarteten uns. David, übrigens 1/2 Seychellois und 1/2 Schweizer, nahm sich alle Zeit für uns, erzählte Wissenswertes über die Insel Curieuse und ihre Bewohner aller Art und beantwortete all unsere Fragen… So erfuhren wir zum Beispiel, dass Curieuse die 5. grösste Insel des Archipels und seit 40 Jahren ein Marine National Park ist. Früher lebten hier die Lepra Kranke (bis 1965), dessen von der Natur zurückeroberten Ruinen man noch sehen kann. Die Aldabra Riesenschildkröten Männchen werden bis zu 300 kg, die Weibchen ungefähr 180 kg.

Thus on Friday, Christmas Day, I set off at 8:30 am through the Vallée de Mai to the Cote d'Or/Anse Volbert, where I arrived 20 minutes later. David and Julio from Surfari (https://www.surfariseychelles.com) were waiting there with one of their boats and when the jolly Schröder family arrived, we started our tour. Here too, the crossing took no more than 15 minutes and a beautiful beach and wild Aldabra giant tortoises awaited us. David, by the way 1/2 Seychellois and 1/2 Swiss, took all the time for us, told interesting facts about the island of Curieuse and its inhabitants of all kinds and answered all our questions... So we learned for example, that Curieuse is the 5th largest island of the archipelago and is a Marine National Park since 40 years. Here used to live lepers until 1965, the ruins of which have been recaptured by nature can still be seen. The Aldabra giant tortoise males can weigh up to 300 kg, the females around 180 kg.

David bot uns an die wunderschöne ca. 45-minütige Wanderung über den längsten Boardwalk der Seychellen zur Anse St. José zu machen - er holte uns dort mit dem Boot ab... genial! : )

David offered us to do the beautiful 45-minute hike over the longest boardwalk in the Seychelles to Anse St. José - he picked us up there by boat... awesome! : )

Da das Meer recht heftig war heute, war es nicht möglich am geplanten Ort der Mini-Insel St. Pierre zu schnorcheln, stattdessen versuchten wir es an der Südostküste von Curieuse. Ich versuchte auch nochmals Fotos mit meiner Unterwasserhülle zu schiessen, aber heute klappte es überhaupt nicht... : (

Since the sea was quite violent today, it was not possible to snorkel at the planned location of the mini-island St. Pierre, instead we tried on the south-east coast of Curieuse. I also tried once more to take photos with my underwater cover, but today it didn't work at all... : (
